PFO Africa Secures Concession for Cote d'Ivoire's Largest Solar Project

Infrastructure investor PFO Africa has signed a concession agreement and power off-take deal with the government of Cote d'Ivoire for a 52-MWp solar project. PFO Energies, a subsidiary of PFO Africa, will design, finance, build, and operate the photovoltaic (PV) park, which is estimated to require an investment of XOF 39.5 billion (USD 65.2m/EUR 60.2m). The Ferke solar project, located in the town of Sokhoro, is expected to generate 90 GWh of electricity annually, enough to supply over 370,000 local residents. Construction is set to begin in the second half of this year and will take approximately 14 months.

Cote d'Ivoire aims to achieve a 45% renewable energy share by 2030 and recently announced contracts for the deployment of 600 MW of solar PV capacity between 2025 and 2026. The Ferke solar project will contribute to the country's renewable energy goals and help meet the growing demand for electricity in the region.

How will the Ferke solar project contribute to Cote d'Ivoire's renewable energy goals?

  • The Ferke solar project in Cote d'Ivoire will significantly contribute to the country's renewable energy goals by increasing its renewable generation capacity.
  • The project is expected to have a capacity of X MW, which will add a substantial amount of clean energy to the national grid.
  • By supplying renewable energy to the grid, the Ferke solar project will help reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The project will contribute to Cote d'Ivoire's target of increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix, as outlined in its national renewable energy strategy.
  • The Ferke solar project will also help diversify the country's energy sources, reducing its vulnerability to fluctuations in fossil fuel prices and supply disruptions.
  • The construction and operation of the project will create job opportunities, providing employment for local communities and contributing to the country's economic development.
  • The project will enhance energy access in Cote d'Ivoire, as the renewable energy generated will be able to power a significant number of households and businesses.
  • By investing in large-scale solar projects like Ferke, Cote d'Ivoire is positioning itself as a regional leader in renewable energy and attracting further investments in the sector.
  • The Ferke solar project will contribute to the country's efforts to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement and transition towards a low-carbon economy.
