Solar power in Australia

Large-scale solar (LSS) power plants are well suited and widely expanding in Australia. As a result, the cost of LSS power has also dropped dramatically in Australia. The Australian government intends to offset the loss of thermal and hydroelectric capacity by increasing renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy capacity is expected to reach 69.9% by 2030, fueled primarily by solar PV projects.

Solar PV's expansion in Australia is fueled by frequent renewable energy auctions and feed-in tariffs. In addition to government initiatives, each of the 8 provinces has its own solar PV growth programs. In the Australian Capital Territory, for example, the provincial authorities along with solar PV auctions provide interest-free rooftop solar loans.

The demand for Rooftop solar panels has also grown across the island continent, with over 2400000 installations as of April 2020. This implies that Australia outnumbered the United States where  2.3 million households are benefiting from rooftop solar energy.

Limondale solar farm

It is a  solar power station with an installed capacity of 349MW. The plant is located in Balranard, New South Wales (NSW). It is being developed by Innogy.  It'll be 14 kilometers south of Balranald.

Once completed, the solar farm, which with roughly 872,000 panels on an area of 2224 acres is slated to be Australia's largest solar installation.

The plant is located near Transgrid's 220kV electrical substation. Transgrid manages and operates the high-voltage energy transmission network in NSW and the Australian Capital Territory, connecting generators, distributors, and key end-users.

Darlington

The largest solar farm connected to the National Electricity Market, Darlington Point is jointly owned by Edify and Fern Trading Development Limited (whose interest is managed by Octopus Investments).  The project was developed and is managed by Edify.

Located approximately 10km south of the town of Darlington Point in the Murrumbidgee shire of western-NSW, the solar farm sits on 1,993 acres of former grazing land. The farm has a power purchase agreement with Delta Electricity to supply 150 MW of renewable energy.

The Darlington Point Solar Farm contains nearly 1 million solar panels spread over 1,000Ha and will provide cheap, clean green energy to over 110,000 homes.

Bungala solar plant

The Bungala Solar project is located 12 kilometers northeast of Port Augusta, South Australia, on 800 acres of rural property administered by “Bungala Aboriginal Corporation” (BAC) near Emaroo and Wami Kata. The plant has a peak capacity of 275MW and was developed by  Reach Energy in two phases. It was then sold the alliance formed by Dutch Infrastructure Fund and Enel Green Power.

The design includes single-axis tilting polycrystalline PV modules that will monitor and follow the movement of the Sun from east to west, enabling the system to boost productivity. The facility will generate enough energy to power about 82 thousand Australian residencies while also reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 520,000 tons.
