Solar power in Canada

Canada due to its large area has a lot of resources for solar power. The regions like the southernmost parts of Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, have the most solar potential. Today, solar energy is becoming a popular way to create power and heat in Canada, and it is serving to minimize pollutants associated with energy production. Despite the cold temperature and high latitudes (which receive a small amount of direct sunlight as compared to mid-latitudes), solar systems are used widely in Canada, from residential solar panels to massive power facilities.

Due to its high latitude, however, the country receives comparatively little solar radiation. This, combined with cloudy weather, results in a capacity factor of only 6%, compared to a capacity factor of 15% in America. According to the Canada Energy Regulator (previously the National Energy Board), By 2040, solar power will account for approximately 3% of total energy generation capacity in Canada.

Travers Solar

It's a huge project, with 1.3 million solar panels to be installed on 3300 acres of land east of Champion, Alta. The project is still in its infancy (in the initial stages of development). The developer of the project is Calgary-based Greengate Power which is managing it with funding from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

The $700 million project - Canada's largest - will produce enough energy to power thousands of homes according to Dan Balaban, Greengate CEO.

The capacity of the project is expected to be 465 megawatts AC, 691 megawatts DC, which in simple words means power for more than 150,000 homes.

Brooks Solar Farm

The proposed Brooks Solar Farm is a 400 megawatt (MW) plant located on 3,900 acres of private land in the County of Newell, Alberta, west of the City of Brooks, immediately adjacent to the AltaLink Cassils Substation.

The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 470,000 tonnes per year and generate enough electricity to meet the energy demands of more than 90,000 Alberta households. The project's overall capital cost is estimated to be around $500 million, delivering a significant amount of direct and indirect economic development to Newell and Brooks.

The project is expected to be completed in phases with commercial operations commencing in late 2022 and continuing over the next 30 years and beyond

Dunmore Solar project

It is a 216-megawatt solar power project located east of Medicine Hat. The project is being developed by Ascent Energy Partners for owner "Dunmore Solar Inc.," which is a subsidiary of global renewable investment firm P&T Global Renewable Energy. The total estimated cost of the project is approximately $200.0M. The project is expected to get down to business by 2023.
