Opdenergy Reaches 1.68TWh Solar Deal in Chile

Opdenergy Holding SA, a Spanish renewables developer, has signed a multi-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 108-MW solar farm in central Chile. Under the 12-year contract, the company is to supply 1.68 TWh of solar energy, or an average of 140 GWh annually, to an international utility. The Alcones solar project, to be located in the commune of Marchigue in the O’Higgins region, is expected to begin operations in 2025. Once completed, it will bring the company’s total installed capacity in Chile to close to 300 MW, with 171 MW currently operational and another 1,000 MW in the development phase.

What Is the Impact of Opdenergy Holding SA's PPA for Chilean Solar Farm?

  • The PPA will provide a long-term price guarantee for the Alcones solar project, helping to secure the financing for the project and increasing its viability.
  • The Alcones solar project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1 million tons of CO2 per year, aiding Chile’s efforts to reach its 2030 emissions reduction targets.
  • The solar farm is anticipated to create up to 150 jobs during the construction phase and 10 permanent posts during the operational period.
  • It is expected to provide energy to 150,000 Chilean households or the equivalent of 600,000 people.
  • The project is being developed in line with the Chilean government’s energy transition plan, which seeks to increase the share of renewables in the country’s energy mix.
