Masdar Powers Angola with 150MW Solar
- Masdar joins forces with the Angolan government to create 600 jobs and power 90,000 homes--a major step towards 10 GW of clean energy capacity in Africa by 2030.
Masdar, Abu Dhabi's Future Energy Company, has signed an agreement with the Angolan Ministry of Energy and Water to build a 150-MW solar park in the Quipungo region of Hulia Province in southern Angola. This project is expected to generate electricity for 90,000 homes annually and create up to 600 jobs during the construction phase. It is also intended to improve the national electrification rate to 60 percent by 2025.
Masdar has already made a commitment to invest 8 billion US dollars in project finance to deliver 10 GW of clean energy capacity in Africa by 2030. In January, the company announced plans to add 5 GW of renewable energy capacity across Angola, Uganda and Zambia. The announcement of the new project in Angola marks an important step towards achieving this goal.
What Impact Will the 150-MW Solar Park in Angola Have?
- The 150-MW Solar Park will significantly reduce Angola's dependence on fossil fuels, leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the region.
- The agreement between Masdar and the Angolan Ministry of Energy and Water is part of a broader effort to create a sustainable energy model in the country, with a focus on significantly increasing the nation's electrification rate.
- The new project will improve energy access to 90,000 homes with reliable, affordable electricity.
- The construction phase of the project is expected to create up to 600 jobs, providing an economic boost to the rural and impoverished Quipungo region of Hulia Province.
- This project is part of Masdar’s larger 8 billion US dollar investment portfolio to bring 10 GW of clean energy capacity to Africa by 2030.
- The 150-MW solar park will contribute to building a stronger, more resilient and sustainable energy network across Angola.
