Libya launches 500-MW solar project

  • French multi-energy group TotalEnergies SE (EPA: TTE) and also power manufacturer General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) have introduced a 500-MW solar project in the north of Libya.

The solar park will certainly be built in the area of As-Saddadah and is the first and biggest of its kind in the North African country, GECOL claimed last week.

It will certainly be followed by even more renewable energy projects that will be executed in the country to sustain its public power supply, as the state-owned electricity manufacturer said previously this year.

The begin of the project adheres to the signing of an initial contract between TotalEnergies as well as GECOL in May.

The project belongs to the participation between GECOL and Libya's Renewable Energy Company aimed at improving the environment-friendly energy capacity in the country. By the end of the decade, Libya seeks to get to 22% of renewables in its electricity generation.
