Energy company LEAG has commenced construction of a 24.8 MWp solar park in the Lusatia mining area of eastern Germany. The solar park in Boxberg, Nochten, Saxony will have a capacity of up to 26 GWh per year and is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2024. Developed with partner EP New Energies, the photovoltaic plant will be near to LEAG's coal-fired Boxberg power station and is part of the Gigawatt Factory initiative, which aims to add 7 GW of renewables to the region by 2030 with a total investment of EUR 10 billion. Most of the solar and wind parks are being built on former opencast mining areas.
