Alight and Axfood Unveil Sweden’s Largest Solar Farm Near Hallstavik
- Alight and Axfood have inaugurated Sweden's largest solar farm near Hallstavik. The 64-MWp Ax-el facility will supply green power for 12,600 homes and meet 15% of Axfood’s energy needs.
Sweden has taken a significant step forward in its renewable energy journey with the official opening of the country’s largest solar farm. Developed by solar energy company Alight in partnership with grocery giant Axfood AB, the 64-megawatt-peak (MWp) installation was inaugurated this week near Hallstavik in Stockholm County.
Known as the Ax-el solar farm, the project spans 82 hectares—roughly 202 acres—and will generate approximately 63 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. That’s enough to power around 12,600 average households each year. More importantly for Axfood, the output will meet about 15% of the company’s total electricity consumption.
The solar farm was built, is owned, and is operated by Alight, and its development is backed by a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). Under this agreement, Axfood has committed to buying all the electricity produced by the facility for at least the next ten years.
“This project represents a major leap in our mission to accelerate the transition to solar energy in the Nordics,” said Warren Campbell, CEO of Alight. “The Ax-el plant delivers five times the output of our first major solar farm, which we brought online just five years ago.”
The project was made possible with green financing provided by SEB, while Vattenfall Eldistribution AB handled the grid connection, ensuring seamless integration into Sweden’s power infrastructure.
With this launch, Axfood and Alight are not only powering homes and stores but also setting a benchmark for corporate sustainability in the region.
