What is Oxidation-reduction reaction (also redox reaction)?

A type of chemical reaction associated with electron transfer between the agents. During reduction, an agent gains an extra electron. During oxidation an agent loses an electron. As a rule, both processes take place simultaneously as a single reaction, commonly releasing energy.
