Solar power in Mexico
Globally, the PV sector regards Mexico as one of the top 5 countries to make an investment. The trend of solar power is growing rapidly in Mexico and it is considered to have e enormous economic potential. In 2016, México was Latin America's 2nd largest generator of solar energy, with 180 megawatts of total capacity share and numerous projects under process to add more capacity of at least 500 megawatts. While Ciudad Juárez- a Mexican city- is regarded as the key player in solar technology development, Mexico as a whole is a dynamo for the development and deployment of solar power. In terms of solar favorability, the country is ranked number 43 on the global level.
Solar energy has the ability to provide enormous amounts of energy in Mexico. 70 percent of the country receives more than 4.5 kWh/m2/day of solar radiation. With 15 percent efficient PVs, a square 25-kilo meter on every side in the Sonoran Desert or the state of Chihuahua can generate enough energy to completely fulfill the energy need of Mexico. In 2012, legislation was passed mandating 35 percent of electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2024 and 50 percent reductions in carbon dioxide emissions below 2000 levels by 2050. Coupled with falling solar installation costs, the climate law of 2012 was predicted to result in six gigawatts of solar generation in the country by 2020.
Villanueva solar plant
With an installed capacity of 754MW Villanueva is a solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant built by "Enel Green Power Mexico"(EGPM), a subsidiary of Enel. It is located in the Viesca district of Coahuila, Mexico. The plant, which is anticipated to cost 650 million USD, will be the largest solar power plant in the Americas. The annual production will be 1.700 GWh.
Don José photovoltaic solar plant
Enel opened the 238 MW Don José photovoltaic solar facility in San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico, through its renewable subsidiary "EGPM".Don José is EGP's 5th renewable energy plant to be launched in 2018, making the overall installed capacity for the year over 1 gigawatt. The cost of building Don José, which was completed 5 months ahead of schedule, was around 220 million dollars.
The Puerto Libertad photovoltaic complex
Towards the end of 2018, ACCIONA completed the “Puerto Libertad photovoltaic complex” in Sonora, Mexico, which was created in a 50-50 partnership with Tuto Energy. It has a total installed capacity of 405 megawatts (MWp) and a rated capacity of 317.5 megawatts (MW). 229 MWp (180 MW nominal) of the solar plant's total capacity will be used to fulfill the energy needs of the “Federal Electricity Commission” (CFE). This solar plant is not only one of the largest PV projects in Latin America and Mexico, but also the country's biggest renewable project on an international level.
