French renewables company Voltalia S.A. has secured a contract to build and operate 230 MW of solar parks in Ireland on behalf of Power Capital Renewable Energy. Construction works on the projects are already underway, with four PV farms being built in the southeastern part of the country. The plants are expected to enter commercial operations by 2024, with the output being sold under long-term contracts within the tech sector. Voltalia has also signed a 15-year O&M agreement for the sites. In addition, last month the company was selected to install a 108-MW solar PV farm in Ireland for Bord na Mona and ESB. This plant is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2021.

What Is Voltalia's Solar Project in Ireland?

  • The projects will cover an area of 600 hectares, spread over four counties.
  • The four solar parks will be developed in Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Waterford.
  • Voltalia will also be responsible for connecting the solar sites to the grid and will invest around €200 million in the project.
  • The solar parks are expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 130,000 homes and reduce CO2 emissions by over 150,000 tonnes each year.
  • Voltalia will be able to benefit from the Irish government’s Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (REFIT) scheme and will also be eligible for the country’s new renewable energy subsidy scheme.
  • The company’s total installed capacity in Ireland will reach approximately 450MW by the end of 2021.
