Trina Storage and Stiemo kick-off 180 MWh of batteries in Lithuania as springboard to multi-GWh Baltic pipeline

  • Trina Storage and Stiemo will install three 30 MW/60 MWh Elementa 2 BESS in Lithuania by mid-2026, the first step in a multi-GWh storage rollout across the Baltics.

Chinese system integrator Trina Storage and Lithuanian EPC Stiemo have formed a strategic partnership to deploy “several gigawatt-hours” of battery energy-storage systems (BESS) across Lithuania and neighbouring Baltic markets over the next three to five years. The alliance launches with three 30-MW/60-MWh Elementa 2 units—90 MW/180 MWh in total—already contracted.

First wave: Anykščiai, Skuodas & Jonava

The inaugural projects will be built in the towns of Anykščiai, Skuodas and Jonava. Each site will pair Trina’s liquid-cooled Elementa 2 containerised solution with single-axis power conversion and EMS controls, providing two hours of discharge for grid-balancing and renewable-firming duties. Equipment deliveries begin December 2025, with commercial operation slated for mid-2026.

Why Lithuania and why now?

Lithuania is racing to integrate rising on- and offshore wind plus solar volumes after synchronising with the continental European grid earlier this year. Vilnius targets 1.5 GW / 4.4 GWh of new storage by 2028 and is backing projects with grants that cover up to 30 % of capex. Interest has been fierce—50 applications sought nearly double the funding available in the first call, prompting the government to add a further €37 million to the scheme last week.

Scaling toward the gigawatt era

Beyond the first 180 MWh tranche, Trina and Stiemo are evaluating both co-located and stand-alone sites throughout the Baltics, aiming to reach multiple GWh within five years. Stiemo will manage local engineering, procurement and construction, while Trina brings product supply and system integration expertise—building on Elementa 2’s track record in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Technology snapshot: Elementa 2

Elementa 2 is Trina’s second-generation utility BESS platform, offered in 5 MWh enclosures with LFP cells, integrated HVAC and fire-safety systems, and a design life of up to 20 years. The architecture supports two- to four-hour configurations and can be deployed in either string- or central-PCS layouts, giving developers flexibility in revenue stacking.

Outlook

With policy tailwinds, generous EU funding, and a region hungry for flexible capacity, the Baltic states are emerging as the next hotspot for utility storage. If Trina and Stiemo’s roadmap materialises, their portfolio could account for a meaningful slice of the 4 GWh of storage Lithuania alone expects to commission by decade’s end—cementing Elementa 2’s foothold in Northern Europe and giving Stiemo a marquee partner for regional expansion.
