- TotalEnergies is building a 216-MW solar-battery hybrid system, producing over 400 GWh of clean electricity, in South Africa's Northern Cape province. Set to become operational in 2025, the project will ensure a continuous supply of green electricity for local utility Eskom.
TotalEnergies has begun construction on a 216-MW solar-battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Africa's Northern Cape province. The hybrid site is expected to produce more than 400 GWh of clean electricity annually and has a power purchase agreement in place with local utility Eskom. The project was developed by a consortium of TotalEnergies, Hydra Storage Holding and Reatile Renewables, and is scheduled to become operational in 2025. The hybrid design will allow for the continuous supply of green electricity beyond the hours of sunshine.
How Will TotalEnergies' 216-MW BESS Impact SA?
- The BESS will be enough to power more than 140,000 South African homes and businesses.
- The 216-MW BESS will avoid the emission of over 130,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
- This project will act as a bridge to South Africa's renewable energy transition.
- The combination of the solar power and battery storage will provide a reliable, clean source of energy around the clock.
- The project will help drive job creation in the area, with hundreds of jobs during its construction and operation.
- It will help South Africa move closer to its goal of deriving energy from 90% renewable sources by 2030.
- The project will also help provide a much-needed boost to the region's economy, as well as the wider South African economy.
