A year and a half ago, the non-governmental organization GivePower developed a desalination station driven by solar energy in Kenya. The Solar Water Farm supplies 35 thousand locals with potable water daily.

The plant is located on the Kenyan Eastern Coast, in the village of Kiunga. This destination has been chosen because the area had been subject to extraordinary drought, as a result of which the local population was deprived of clean fresh water over the years. It is dangerous to drink untreated water since this can result in such severe diseases like dysentery or cholera.

The non-profit organization strives to supply clean fresh water throughout the globe. Conventional desalination stations are very expensive in operation. So GivePower has decided to search other prospects like utilization of renewable power, which is likely to make the process of water transformation more cost-effective.

The Kenya-based project generates power by using photovoltaic modules. The plant’s capacity is 50kWt, which is enough for uninterrupted running of two water pumps turning seawater into drinkable water.

Earlier, the way to the place where the locals could get some water safe to drink and back took about two hours a day. Or they used to consume polluted water from wells, leading to regular illness. They had to save priceless fresh water by bathing and washing is saline water, which is very harmful for skin.

The solar-powered water farm by GivePower is a great progress in bringing the world closer to green energy and improving human lives globally.
