RES Proposes 49.9-MW Battery in Devon for Grid Balancing

RES Group is seeking permission to install a 49.9-MW battery energy storage system in Devon, Southwest England, following positive feedback from the local community. The proposal has been submitted to the Torridge District Council and is expected to be reviewed by the Planning Committee in the coming months. The battery facility will be used by National Grid to balance fluctuations in electricity demand and generation, and will connect directly to a 132-kV overhead powerline.

The construction of the BESS is estimated to take about 12 months and will include biodiversity measures such as planting native hedgerows, grasslands, and wildflower areas. RES, which has been active in the battery energy storage sector for a decade, has developed over 700MW of projects in the UK and Ireland. The company's Top Gun Energy Storage Project aims to address the need for such facilities in the region and contribute to the overall energy infrastructure.

What environmental measures will RES Group implement for their 49.9-MW battery energy storage system?

  • Implementing native hedgerows, grasslands, and wildflower areas to promote biodiversity
  • Using sustainable construction materials and practices to minimize environmental impact
  • Implementing measures to reduce noise and visual impact on the surrounding area
  • Monitoring and managing any potential impacts on local wildlife during construction and operation
  • Implementing a decommissioning plan to ensure the site is restored to its natural state once the facility reaches the end of its lifespan.
