Renewable Energy Market Analysis of Southeastern Europe by IRENA

Dec 26, 2019 04:21 PM ET

IRENA has explored the trends of renewable sector in Southeastern Europe. The investigation is based on analysis of the current power sector state, renewable scaling-up prospects, potential influence of energy transition, policies and investment needed. The report shows how sustainable energy is expected to influences SEE’s national economies.

The costs for green energy continue to fall, while the outdated energy infrastructure requires modernization. Taken together, this stimulates transition to clean, eco-friendly power. However, some financial challenges still exist.

The research findings include the following:

Thanks to measures of policy support, yearly investment in wind and solar in Southeastern Europe reached maximum $3.7bn in 2012.

The next ten years are likely to become fundamental due to decreasing wind and solar costs and the authorities of SEE countries introducing reforms in the power sector.

Holistic policy framework is required for supporting end-use renewable energy in such sectors as transportation and heating.

Biofuel is a cost-efficient source of energy used in every end-use sector.

Renewable energy efficiency increase and scaling-up will stimulate creation of new jobs and economic growth.

Development of strong RESCs and control of energy transition socio-economic footprint require proper policy and dedicated targets.
