Origin Energy Ltd has announced plans to expand its Eraring battery in New South Wales to 700 MW, with Wartsila selected as the preferred contractor for the project. The batteries are intended to replace the capacity of the Eraring coal-fired power station, which will now remain in operation until August 2027.
The expansion will involve an investment of AUD 450 million and will see the addition of 240 MW/1,030 MWh of capacity in the second phase of the project. Finnish technology group Wartsila will provide the technology for the project, with construction set to begin in early 2025 and operations expected to start in the first quarter of 2027.
