New Zealand's Largest Solar Farm Plan Goes to Consultation

Far North Solar Farm has submitted a proposal to build a 420MWp solar farm in the Mackenzie Basin, which would provide power for 100,000 homes. The 670 hectare farm sits on the northern shore of Lake Benmore and is owned by Douglas McIntyre, and is used as dairy support. Far North Solar director Richard Holmewood said the chosen site was prime due to its flat landscape and proximity to existing power infrastructure. Last month, consent for a solar farm in the area was declined due to potential effects on an ecologically significant area. The Environmental Defence Society submitted against the project and Chief Executive Gary Taylor has said they need to check if the environmental impacts will be minor. National has signalled its intent to fast-track the consenting process for renewable energy projects, with the Mackenzie District Council having no comment on the plans.

Will Far North Solar Farm's Proposal Impact Ecologically Significant Area?

  • Far North Solar Farm's proposal could potentially effect an ecologically significant area due to the location of the project.
  • The Environmental Defense Society (EDS) has already expressed concern about the impact that the project could have on the local environment.
  • The Mackenzie District Council have yet to make any official comments regarding the proposal.
  • However, under the National Government’s plans to fast-track renewable energy projects, the Council may be required to approve the plans.
  • In order to approve the project, the Council must first assess the possible environmental impact of the project.
  • This assessment will need to consider any potential effects on the local flora and fauna, as well as any potential disruption to the local water supply.
  • The EDS has said that the Council must ensure that any potential environmental impacts of the project are assessed and mitigated before any approval is granted.
