L'Oréal and EDF Renewables Sign 15-Year Solar PPA

• French personal care company L’Oréal has partnered for renewable energy with EDF Renewables through a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The two solar parks located in the Corrèze and Vosges regions will produce 25% of L’Oréal’s energy consumption in France.

What happened?

French personal care company L’Oréal has recently signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with EDF Renewables, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the French utility EDF Group. Under this agreement, EDF will be focussing on two solar parks located in the Corrèze and Vosges regions, with a cumulative installed power of 27 MWp. This will enable EDF to produce 25% of the energy consumed by L’Oréal in France. Additionally, EDF has been supplying electricity to L’Oréal’s wind farm for two years already. (Source: PV Magazine)

Why does it matter?

Customers have always demanded natural, organic and chemical-free beauty products from their brands and they want companies themselves to be sustainable. To meet these demands and become more sustainable, beauty companies are increasingly turning to clean energy – solar power. L’Oréal’s recent agreement with EDF Renewables is a step in the right direction and proves that the company is serious about its sustainability ambitions and its goal of achieving carbon neutrality at all its sites by 2025. Other beauty brands such as Aveda, Dr. Bronner’s, Twelve Beauty, Estée Lauder, Honua Hawaiian Skincare, and BYBI are also successfully using solar power.

In India, Indian Ayurvedic brand Soultree of Vedicare Ayurveda Pvt Ltd. became the first brand to start a fully solar-powered flagship store in Gurugram. Similarly, EDF Renewables in Australia recently announced the acquisition of the 10 GW Newcastle floating offshore wind farm located in Australia. As more and more companies and brands embrace renewable energy sources, the shift towards a greener and more sustainable future will only continue to grow.
