LCF Alliance Secures €95M for Solar Revamp in Italy

Italian renewables operator LCF Alliance has secured a €95-million project financing loan from Société Générale and BayernLB to refinance and upgrade its solar portfolio. The funding will be used to refurbish 42 aging photovoltaic plants and add new grid-parity capacity, increasing the portfolio's capacity to approximately 45 MW. The financing, structured into five credit lines, will support efficiency upgrades and extensions, with advisory support from L&B Partners. The project aims to enhance output by 10-15% and reduce operational costs, aligning with Italy's energy transition goals.

LCF Alliance plans to start retrofit works this autumn, replacing old panels with advanced 600-watt bifacial modules and installing single-axis trackers. Battery-ready inverters will be deployed to prepare for future storage additions. The construction is expected to last 12-14 months, with new capacity coming online in stages. This initiative supports Italy's National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan, which targets an increase in solar capacity from 30 GW in 2024 to 80 GW by 2030. LCF is also exploring additional solar projects, including agrivoltaic sites, leveraging the new lending structure for future acquisitions.

How will LCF Alliance's solar upgrades impact Italy's energy transition goals?

  • Enhances Italy's solar capacity, contributing to the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan's target of 80 GW by 2030.
  • Increases efficiency and output of existing solar infrastructure, aligning with goals to boost renewable energy production.
  • Reduces operational costs, making solar energy more competitive and attractive for further investment.
  • Supports grid stability and integration of renewable energy through advanced technology like bifacial modules and single-axis trackers.
  • Prepares for future energy storage solutions, enhancing the flexibility and reliability of solar power.
  • Encourages further development of innovative solar projects, such as agrivoltaics, promoting sustainable land use.
  • Strengthens Italy's position in the renewable energy sector, potentially attracting more international investment.
  • Contributes to reducing carbon emissions, supporting Italy's commitment to EU climate targets.
