Latvian Solar Boom: Ignitis Group's Record-Breaking Portfolio

Feb 21, 2024 11:09 AM ET
  • Ignitis Group to build largest solar portfolio in Baltic states, powering 100,000 households annually with possibility of wind power hybridisation. Aiming for 4-5 GW green generation by 2030.

Ignitis Group, a Lithuanian utility company, is set to begin construction on a 239 MW solar portfolio in Latvia, the largest of its kind in the Baltic states. The portfolio consists of three separate power generating facilities, including the 94 MW Varme site and the 145 MW Stelpe solar project. The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 178 million.

The solar sites are expected to be operational by 2025 and will produce enough clean electricity to power around 100,000 households annually. There is also the possibility of adding wind power to each of the assets through hybridisation. Ignitis Group aims to install 4-5 GW of green generation capacities by 2030, with these projects in Latvia playing a key role in achieving that goal.
