Large scale solar passed the 200-GWAC milestone in 2019
Large scale solar passed the 200-GWAC milestone in 2019, following another year of record deployment; according to preliminary figures released today by Wiki-Solar. New installations topped 40-GWAC in 2019 making it the tenth consecutive year of rising figures
“It took about a decade to reach the 100-GW record”, said Wiki-Solar founder Philip Wolfe;
“the next 100-GW was achieved in just three years”.
Emerging markets led the revitalised growth, after a lacklustre 2018 struggled to maintain the
annual records. “Significant contributions from countries like Australia, Vietnam, Mexico and
Egypt have inspired this renewed growth”, says Wolfe. “Expect new entrants to the top-10
countries, when we publish the confirmed figures in March. China, USA and India will stay at
the top, but it will probably be the last time the UK and Germany hold onto their 4&5 positions.
We expect to see them being overtaken in 2020 by Australia, a resurgent Spain, and maybe also
Mexico and Chile”.
Wiki-Solar will publish full 2019 figures with country-by-country installation figures in a couple
of months, when all the data is in. It expects the overall outcome to be close to the preliminary
figures, noting: “There are usually some new projects reported by official information sources,
but this may be counterbalanced by delays to projects originally due for completion in 2019.”
