Scatec has switched on its 540 MW Kenhardt Solar and Battery hybrid project in South Africa. The complex features almost 1 million PV modules and 456 battery units and is located in the Northern Cape Province. It will produce electricity to power 500,000 households, reducing the country's CO2 emissions by 1.2 million tonnes annually. It has a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom to provide 150 MW of dispatchable power to the grid every day. The USD-1-billion project was 51% owned by Scatec and 49% by H1 Holdings, its local Black Economic Empowerment partner. This project is an example of the potential of integrating solar and battery storage to meet energy needs.
