Dutch-Norwegian company SolarDuck and Japan's Tokyu Corp have installed a 100 kW offshore floating solar photovoltaic power plant in Japan, the first of its kind in the country. The project was completed in collaboration with Kyocera Communication Systems Corp and is a demonstration project of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Policy Planning Bureau. The renewable energy generated will be used to power electric mobility vehicles and an electric boat operated by Open Street Corp.

SolarDuck and Everblue Technologies Inc have been working on the offshore floating solar photovoltaic project since November 2022. Over fiscal year 2024, the companies will conduct demonstrations of power generation, power storage in batteries on the ground, and transportation of the storage batteries.

What is the significance of the first offshore floating solar power plant in Japan?

  • The first offshore floating solar power plant in Japan is a significant milestone in the country's renewable energy sector, showcasing innovative technology and solutions for clean energy generation.
  • The collaboration between SolarDuck, Tokyu Corp, Kyocera Communication Systems Corp, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Policy Planning Bureau highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing sustainable energy projects.
  • The renewable energy generated by the offshore floating solar power plant will be utilized to power electric mobility vehicles and an electric boat, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting eco-friendly transportation options.
