Iberdrola Begins Commissioning 316-MW Solar Farm in Spain

• Iberdrola has begun commissioning its 316-MW Ciudad Rodrigo solar farm in Salamanca, marking a major step in Spain’s renewable energy expansion.

Spanish energy giant Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) has started the commissioning process of its 316-MW Ciudad Rodrigo solar farm, located in Salamanca province, Castile and Leon. The project is among the company’s largest photovoltaic developments in Spain and underscores Iberdrola’s leadership in advancing renewable capacity across the Iberian Peninsula.

The Ciudad Rodrigo facility will generate enough clean power to supply over 150,000 households annually, according to company estimates, while avoiding thousands of tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Once fully operational, the project will significantly strengthen the region’s renewable energy portfolio and support Spain’s national decarbonisation targets.

The project has also delivered a boost to the local economy. During construction, hundreds of jobs were created, with many sourced from nearby municipalities. Iberdrola has a track record of partnering with local suppliers and contractors, ensuring that large-scale renewable developments contribute to regional employment and industrial activity.

This new solar farm forms part of Iberdrola’s broader strategy to invest heavily in solar PV, wind, and green hydrogen, in line with its ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Castile and Leon has become a focal point for these investments, thanks to its vast land availability, favorable solar irradiation, and supportive regional policies.

Commissioning works are expected to progress through the coming weeks, after which the Ciudad Rodrigo plant will gradually ramp up generation and deliver clean power directly into Spain’s electricity grid.

With this milestone, Iberdrola continues to cement its role as a key driver of Spain’s energy transition, demonstrating how large-scale solar infrastructure can deliver both environmental and economic benefits.
