Hekla Signs PPA For 86-MW Sztum Solar Park In Poland
- Energy trader Hekla inks long-term offtake from PAD RES’s 86 MW Sztum PV project, boosting its zero-carbon contract portfolio beyond 1.2 GW.
Polish green-energy supplier Hekla Energy has agreed to purchase the entire output of the 86-MW Sztum solar park now rising in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, after signing a multi-year power-purchase agreement with developer PAD RES.
Located near the towns of Kosalinka and Barlewice, Sztum forms the cornerstone of a wider complex that also includes the 26.9-MW Mikołajki Pomorskie array. Engineering group Electrum was hired in March to add almost 19 MW of extra panels, ultimately raising the hub’s nameplate capacity to roughly 132 MW. Grid connection is slated for the fourth quarter of 2025, with annual generation forecast at more than 90 GWh—enough to power 50,000 Polish households.
For Hekla, the deal deepens a rapidly expanding clean-energy portfolio that already tops 1.2 GW under contract across wind, solar, biogas and small hydro assets nationwide. Securing output from Sztum will allow the Warsaw-based trader to offer large industrial clients fixed-price, zero-emission electricity at a time when wholesale markets remain volatile. PAD RES, meanwhile, locks in predictable cash flows that can be leveraged to finance future pipeline projects.
PAD RES is a joint venture between private-equity house Griffin Capital Partners and Japan’s Kajima Europe. The firm controls some 1 GW of secured grid-connection capacity and earlier this year energised three PV farms totalling 251 MW, part of Poland’s broader pivot away from coal.
The PPA aligns with Poland’s target of sourcing at least 23 percent of final energy from renewables by 2030, up from 17 percent today. Analysts note that merchant solar still faces balancing-market risk, making utility PPAs like Hekla’s vital to unlocking project debt. With construction on schedule and module deliveries underway, Sztum is poised to become one of northern Poland’s largest single-site photovoltaic installations.
