  • Harmony Energy powers the future with new battery storage sites, boosting capacity to 395.4 MW—enough to energize 200,000 homes for two hours!

Harmony Energy Income Trust plc has commenced commercial operations at two new battery energy storage sites in the UK, adding a combined capacity of nearly 83 MW. This expansion brings the company's total installed capacity to 395.4 MW/790.8 MWh, fully operationalizing its portfolio. The sites, Wormald Green with 33 MW/66 MWh and Hawthorn Pit with 49.9 MW/99.8 MWh, utilize liquid-cooled technology from Envision Energy and will offer energy trading, capacity services, and frequency regulation.

The newly energized batteries can store enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 200,000 homes for two hours. Max Slade, director of Harmony Energy Advisors Ltd, praised the successful completion of all eight projects in their portfolio since the company’s IPO in late 2021, highlighting the teamwork of their key suppliers. This achievement follows the earlier commissioning of the 35-MW/70-MWh Rusholme BESS in North Yorkshire in August.

How will Harmony Energy's new sites impact the UK's battery storage capacity landscape?

- Increased Battery Storage Capacity: With the addition of nearly 83 MW from the new sites, Harmony Energy significantly boosts the UK's overall battery storage capacity, bringing the total to approximately 395.4 MW/790.8 MWh. This increase is crucial for accommodating the growing demand for renewable energy solutions in the UK.

- Support for Renewable Energy Integration: The new battery sites will play a vital role in balancing the electricity grid, particularly as the UK transitions to more renewable energy sources. By efficiently storing and dispatching energy generated from intermittent sources like wind and solar, these sites help enhance grid stability and reliability.

- Enhanced Grid Services: The operational capabilities of the Wormald Green and Hawthorn Pit sites will enable Harmony Energy to provide critical grid services, such as frequency regulation and capacity services. This will help ensure that supply and demand are matched effectively, reducing the risk of blackouts and supporting overall grid resilience.

- Environmental Benefits: By maximizing the use of stored energy during peak demand times and minimizing reliance on fossil fuels, these battery storage systems will contribute to reduced carbon emissions. This aligns with the UK's broader climate goals and efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

- Economic Impact: The expansion of battery storage facilities not only fosters job creation in the renewable energy sector but also stimulates local economies. Increased investment in energy infrastructure tends to have a positive ripple effect, aiding job growth across various related industries.

- Future Expansion Potential: The successful commissioning of these projects demonstrates Harmony Energy's capability to undertake larger endeavors in battery storage. This sets the stage for potential future expansions and additional projects as the demand for energy storage solutions grows in the UK market.

- Collaboration with Technology Providers: The deployment of advanced liquid-cooled technology from Envision Energy highlights the importance of partnerships in the renewable energy space. Such collaborations are essential for innovation and enabling efficient execution of new projects in the competitive energy landscape.

- Enhanced Energy Trading Opportunities: The operational new sites will enable Harmony Energy to engage in energy trading more effectively. By strategically deploying stored energy during peak pricing times, the company can optimize revenues while providing more stability to the energy grid.

- Addressing Energy Security: As energy prices fluctuate and geopolitical concerns impact energy supplies, enhancing battery storage capacity offers a form of energy security. It ensures that energy is readily available when needed, reducing reliance on external energy sources.

- Encouraging Investment in Renewables: The successful commissioning of multiple battery energy storage systems by Harmony Energy may attract further investments into the renewable sector. Investors often view established and expanding companies as stable opportunities, fostering a more robust investment climate for future renewable projects.

By contributing to all these areas, Harmony Energy's new battery storage sites not only enhance their operational portfolio but also have broader implications for the UK energy landscape as it adapts to increasing reliance on sustainable and reliable energy solutions.
