Green Giant: SkyPower, AFC Partner on 200-MW Solar Project
- SkyPower and AFC team up to bring solar power to the DRC, driving economic growth and sustainability in Africa. A bright future ahead!
SkyPower Global and Africa Finance Corporation have agreed to jointly develop a 200-MW solar project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This project, known as the Green Giant project, is the first phase of a larger initiative to generate 1,000 MW of solar power in the DRC. The necessary approvals for the initial 200-MW project have been secured and construction is set to begin by 2025.
The collaboration between SkyPower and AFC aims to drive industrialization, create local jobs, promote sustainable economic growth, and facilitate a transition to net zero emissions in the DRC and across Africa. This agreement marks a significant step towards realizing the power purchase agreement previously signed with the DRC’s state-owned utility, Societe Nationale d’Electricite (SNEL). Amadou Wadda, Senior Director of Project Development and Technical Solutions at AFC, expressed optimism about the positive impact this project will have on the region.
