GM Acquires Algolion to Spot EV Battery Fires

General Motors has acquired the Israel-based software startup Algolion, which develops software that can detect potential hazards in battery cells. Algolion's software uses data streams from EV battery management systems to identify abnormalities in cell performance, including thermal runaway propagation events, and can spot changes that may affect battery health much earlier than other methods. GM formed a new organization called the Technology Acceleration and Commercialization organization to lead the acquisition and scout out emerging battery technology. Algolion's six employees, including the company’s founders, will remain based in Israel and join GM's Technical Center.

How Did GM Acquire Algolion?

  • GM acquired Algolion through its new Technology Acceleration and Commercialization organization, which was created to scout out and acquire emerging battery technology.
  • GM was specifically interested in Algolion's software, which uses data streams from EV battery management systems to detect potential hazards in battery cells.
  • GM's Technical Center in Israel will now include Algolion's six employees, including the founders, who will remain based in Israel.
  • GM will benefit from Algolion's software by being able to identify abnormalities in cell performance much earlier than other methods, including thermal runaway propagation events.
  • Algolion's software will be integrated into GM's existing systems to increase safety for EV batteries.
