Generale du Solaire takes full control of GDS Italia subsidiary
- France’s Generale du Solaire has bought RGreen Invest’s 50% stake in GDS Italia, consolidating ownership to accelerate growth in the Italian market.
French independent power producer Generale du Solaire has acquired the remaining 50% of GDS Italia from fund manager RGreen Invest, taking full ownership of the Italian solar developer and operator. The move consolidates governance and simplifies decision-making just as Italy’s PV market enters a new growth phase driven by corporate PPAs, repowering opportunities, and an expanding pipeline of utility-scale projects.
Full control should streamline everything from capital allocation to EPC procurement. With one shareholder at the helm, GDS Italia can standardize technology choices—modules, inverters, mounting systems—across its portfolio, sharpening buying power and easing operations and maintenance. It also clarifies accountability for grid-code compliance, environmental commitments, and community engagement, all critical in a market where regional authorities and grid operators play decisive roles.
Strategically, Italy offers multiple avenues for value. Brownfield repowering can unlock higher yields on existing interconnections, while greenfield sites in sun-rich southern regions remain attractive for scale. Co-locating batteries is increasingly compelling to capture evening prices and provide fast-response services; even when not built immediately, designs that future-proof interconnection capacity are becoming the norm. On the demand side, corporates seeking long-dated price stability are growing into reliable counterparties for new projects.
For RGreen, the sale crystallizes returns after a period of growth alongside Generale du Solaire. For the buyer, the transaction is a bet that an integrated platform—development through operations—will move faster and with fewer friction costs. The near-term to-do list includes aligning supply contracts, locking long-lead grid equipment, and advancing sites through permitting with clear biodiversity and landscape plans.
As Italy pushes to ramp clean capacity while keeping bills predictable, well-capitalized IPPs with local roots and streamlined structures stand to benefit. GDS Italia, now wholly owned, looks set to be one of them.
