  • South Africa's Gauteng province tackles energy crisis with 800 MW solar farm cluster and 14 micro-grid plants, ensuring power stability for communities and healthcare facilities.

The government of South Africa's Gauteng province has approved the construction of an 800 MW grid-connected solar farm cluster in the Merafong Local Municipality. The project, developed by a consortium of six independent power producers, aims to address the local energy crisis. A land lease agreement has been reached with Sibanye-Stillwater for the project.

In addition to the solar farm cluster, the Gauteng Provincial Government is rolling out 14 micro-grid solar plants, starting with the Alexandra township and expanding to 13 other communities. Solar PV and battery storage systems will also be integrated into 21 government healthcare facilities to protect them from power shortages caused by load shedding.

How will the solar farm cluster and micro-grid plants address Gauteng's energy crisis?

  • The solar farm cluster will provide a significant amount of renewable energy to the grid, helping to alleviate the strain on the existing energy infrastructure in Gauteng.
  • By diversifying the energy sources with solar power, the region will become less reliant on traditional fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a cleaner environment.
  • The micro-grid solar plants in communities like Alexandra will provide a reliable source of electricity, especially during times of load shedding, ensuring that residents have access to power for their daily needs.
  • Integrating solar PV and battery storage systems into healthcare facilities will ensure that critical services are not disrupted during power outages, ultimately improving the quality of healthcare in the region.
  • Overall, the combination of the solar farm cluster and micro-grid plants will help address Gauteng's energy crisis by increasing energy security, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and providing sustainable power solutions for communities and essential services.
