  • EWEC partners with EDF Renewables and KOWEPO for 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar project, powering 160,000 households and reducing carbon emissions in Abu Dhabi.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded the development of the 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar PV project in Abu Dhabi to an international consortium led by EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO), with UAE-based Masdar as the local shareholder. The winning consortium signed a power purchase agreement with EWEC, with the plant expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2026 and powering 160,000 households in the UAE.

Located in Al Ajban, the solar park will reduce the emirate's carbon emissions by 2.4 million metric tonnes per year. This project is part of Abu Dhabi's rapid expansion of solar energy deployment, with the 2-GW Al Dhafra solar park already commissioned and plans for the 1.5 GW Al-Khazna solar park underway.

By 2030, EWEC aims to supply over 50% of Abu Dhabi's electricity from renewable and clean energy sources, with projections to add 1.4 GW of new solar PV annually from 2027 to 2037. The Al Ajban solar project is a significant step towards achieving these renewable energy goals in the UAE.
