EDF, Aukera Partner on Scottish Solar-Battery Project
- EDF partners with Aukera Energy to power 25,000 homes with Benthead Solar Farm, cutting 17,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. AI-driven battery optimization included.
EDF has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Aukera Energy to offtake the entire output of an 84.5-MW solar farm with a 31-MW battery energy storage system in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The PPA will last 9-11 years, depending on the commissioning date of the battery system. The Benthead Solar Farm is expected to begin operations in 2026, generating 78.4 GW of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 25,000 homes and offset 17,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
EDF will also optimize the solar farm's battery using its PowerShift AI-driven platform. The project is part of Aukera's 250-MW portfolio and benefits from a 15-year Contract for Difference (CfD) awarded in the UK's Allocation Round 6 in 2024.
How will EDF's PPA with Aukera Energy impact North Ayrshire's renewable energy landscape?
- Increased Renewable Energy Capacity: The PPA will significantly boost North Ayrshire's renewable energy capacity, contributing to Scotland's overall renewable energy targets and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- Economic Growth and Job Creation: The development and operation of the Benthead Solar Farm are likely to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region, both during the construction phase and through ongoing operations and maintenance.
- Energy Security and Stability: By integrating a 31-MW battery energy storage system, the project will enhance energy security and grid stability, allowing for better management of energy supply and demand fluctuations.
- Environmental Benefits: The project will help reduce carbon emissions by offsetting 17,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, contributing to Scotland's climate goals and improving local air quality.
- Technological Advancement: The use of EDF's PowerShift AI-driven platform to optimize battery performance represents a step forward in the integration of advanced technology in renewable energy projects, potentially setting a precedent for future developments.
- Community Engagement and Support: The project may involve community engagement initiatives, fostering local support and potentially offering community benefits such as educational programs or local energy discounts.
- Long-term Energy Price Stability: The PPA provides a fixed price for the electricity generated, offering long-term price stability for energy consumers in the region and protecting them from market volatility.
- Contribution to National Energy Goals: The project aligns with the UK government's renewable energy targets and commitments to reduce carbon emissions, supporting national efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy.
