China's Solar-Shrimp Power: 1 GW & 1.5M Homes

Jul 31, 2023 12:13 PM ET
  • China has unveiled the world's largest Salt-Light Solar Power Station in Tianjin with enough capacity to power 1.5 million homes and 13sq km of double-sided solar panels that cool the salt water for ideal shrimp farming conditions. Similar projects in other countries are revolutionizing the agro-fishing industry with solar power.

China has combined solar energy with salt production and shrimp farming to create the world's largest Salt-Light Solar Power Station in Tianjin. It covers an area of 13 square kilometres and has the capacity to power up 1.5 million homes. The project employs double-sided solar panels to absorb sunlight and the solar panels also have the added benefit of cooling the salt water below, creating an ideal temperature for shrimp farming. The success of this project has been mirrored in other countries around the world, with similar projects in India, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia. Lightsource BP, the renewables and solar arm of Oil giant BP, also unveiled a 150 MW PV-powered fishery off Taiwan. This is proof of the potential for large-scale solar projects to revolutionize the agro-fishing industry around the world.

What are the Benefits of Solar Power for Agro-Fishing?

  • Solar energy is an efficient and powerful source of energy for agro-fishing.
  • Solar power can be used to power the equipment, activities and processes used within the industry.
  • Solar power helps to reduce the cost of running the agro-fishing business.
  • Solar energy can be used to provide a steady source of power to run agro-fishing operations throughout the year.
  • Solar energy helps to reduce the environmental impact of agro-fishing, as it is a renewable and clean energy source.
  • Solar energy helps to reduce the dependence on traditional energy sources such as coal and gas, which are more polluting.
  • Solar energy can be used to create micro-grids to supply remote areas with electricity and enable agro-fishing activities.
  • Solar energy can be used to create a more reliable power supply, as it is less affected by weather conditions than traditional energy sources.
  • Solar energy can be used to heat saltwater in order to create an ideal temperature for shrimp farming.
