Bruc Unveils 957-MW Solar Mega-Cluster Lighting Up Andalusia’s Renewable
- Bruc inaugurates the 957-MW Cartago solar cluster in Seville, investing EUR 820 million to power nearly half a million Andalusian homes and advance Spain’s energy transition.
Spanish clean-energy developer Bruc has switched on one of Europe’s most ambitious photovoltaic projects, a 957-MW complex dubbed Cartago, reinforcing Andalusia’s position at the forefront of Spain’s green revolution. The EUR 820 million development stitches together 18 individual solar farms across four municipalities in the province of Seville, spreading over 1,610 hectares of former agricultural land now repurposed for carbon-free power.
Cartago’s scale is matched by its engineering centerpiece: the Don Rodrigo node, a 400-kV substation that Bruc describes as the region’s largest privately built grid connection for renewables. By funnelling electricity from the cluster into the national network, the node turns 1,875 GWh of projected annual output into reality—enough to cover the needs of roughly 476,000 households, or every third home in Seville province.
The unveiling propels Cartago to roughly 70 percent of Bruc’s operating solar capacity in Andalusia. Across the wider region, the Madrid-based company now runs 25 solar parks totalling 1,385 MW and is erecting five additional plants (260 MW) that will plug in over the next 18 months. Hybrid projects combining photovoltaic generation with battery storage and onshore wind are already on its drawing board, signalling a strategic shift toward 24-hour renewable supply.
Chief Executive Luis Venero framed the launch as “a decisive step toward a cleaner, more resilient energy landscape,” noting that Bruc has deployed EUR 1.23 billion of a planned EUR 2.26 billion Andalusian investment programme stretching to 2028. By then, the firm expects its regional fleet to top 3 GW and pump out around 3.02 TWh yearly—electricity capable of meeting one-quarter of all household demand in Spain’s most populous autonomous community.
Cartago also serves as a building block in Bruc’s international expansion. The company controls a 6.6-GW pipeline of operating, under-construction and advanced-development assets in Spain and Japan, positioning it to benefit from rising corporate demand for zero-emission power and the EU’s push to triple solar installations by 2030.
With sunlight plentiful and grid upgrades accelerating, Andalusia is fast becoming a test bed for utility-scale renewables. If Cartago’s seamless rollout is any indication, Bruc aims to keep its foot firmly on the accelerator.
