- Borealis AG secures renewable energy future with 10-year PPA, reducing emissions and advancing sustainability goals. #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability
Austrian chemicals company Borealis AG has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Burgenland Energie to source wind and solar power from a renewable energy park in Nickelsdorf. The agreement will provide Borealis with about 70 GWh per year, meeting 55% of the company's local electricity consumption. The power will be directed towards Borealis' facilities in Schwechat, with supply expected to begin in January 2026.
Borealis aims to source 100% of the electricity for its Polyolefins and Base Chemicals business units from renewable sources by 2030. The company expects the new PPA to reduce its annual Scope 2 emissions by approximately 7,300 metric tonnes. This move towards renewable energy reflects Borealis' commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact.
