  • Boom Power's Woolley Solar Farm gets green light, set to power 11,700 homes and cut 7,300 tons of CO₂ annually, enhancing local biodiversity.

Boom Power has received planning approval from Wakefield Council for the 29.7-MW Woolley Solar Farm in West Yorkshire, which will provide renewable energy to approximately 11,700 households annually. The solar farm, located on 55 hectares near Woolley village, will connect to the Woolley Grange grid node via an underground cable.

The project is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by about 7,300 tons each year over its 40-year lifespan. Environmental improvements include the addition of hedgerows, wildflower meadows, and wildlife habitats. This approval follows Boom Power's recent success in overturning a previous refusal for a 22.2-MW project in the region.

How will the Woolley Solar Farm impact local energy and environmental sustainability?

  • Energy Independence: The Woolley Solar Farm will contribute to local energy independence by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and imported energy sources.
  • Job Creation: The construction and maintenance of the solar farm will create jobs, boosting the local economy.
  • Biodiversity Enhancement: The introduction of hedgerows, wildflower meadows, and wildlife habitats will support local biodiversity and create a more resilient ecosystem.
  • Educational Opportunities: The solar farm can serve as a learning site for schools and universities, promoting education in renewable energy and environmental conservation.
  • Community Engagement: The project may foster community engagement and awareness about renewable energy and sustainability practices.
  • Grid Stability: By connecting to the Woolley Grange grid node, the solar farm will enhance grid stability and reliability in the region.
  • Long-term Environmental Benefits: Over its 40-year lifespan, the solar farm will significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability goals.
  • Land Use Optimization: The project utilizes land efficiently, balancing energy production with environmental conservation efforts.
