The brand-new plant, hybridised with 15.4 MWh of battery storage, will lead to the shut-down of 3 hefty fuel oil (HFO) generators during daytime hours. The Fekola mine, which runs 24-hour a day, depends on six HFO generators, the renewables firm claimed.

Fekola is possessed as well as run by Canadian miner B2Gold Corp (TSE: BTO), which authorized the project and a USD-38-million (EUR 31.9 m) financial investment for the setup in 2019.

BayWa r.e. executed the project alongside German solar power expert Suntrace GmbH under the design, purchase and also building and construction (EPC) agreement. Finnish modern technology team Wartsila Corp (HEL: WRT1V) delivered the battery.

The hybrid was effectively incorporated with the conventional energy option at the Fekola website, while the solar plant gets on the means to be 100% complete by the end of June, BayWa r.e. added.
