- Ameresco Inc wins a 20-year deal to build a 78.3-MW/313.34-MWh battery storage system for Colorado’s United Power. This project is estimated to be completed in 2024 and will enable efficient storage and dispatching of power during peak times.
US renewables company Ameresco Inc has secured a 20-year contract to build a 78.3-MW/313.34-MWh battery storage system for Colorado’s northern Front Range electric cooperative, United Power. The system will comprise of four 11.75-MW and four 7.84-MW battery arrays across eight different substation sites to efficiently store and dispatch power during periods of high consumption. The parties anticipate commissioning in 2024, shortly after Ameresco was tapped in June for a 250-MW/1,000-MWh BESS project in east-central Canada in partnership with a unit of Ontario Power Generation.
What Benefits Will Ameresco's Project Provide?
- The system will be able to store and re-dispatch power during periods of high demand, reducing the need for traditional grid power sources and providing more efficient and cost-effective energy delivery.
- The project will help United Power meet its renewable energy goals, as the cooperative seeks to reduce its reliance on conventional sources and transition to a clean energy future.
- The system is expected to help United Power reduce its peak electric load by 10-20%, helping to lessen the burden on the electric grid and improve overall grid reliability.
- The battery storage system is expected to provide economic benefits for local communities, as it will reduce power costs and energy losses associated with large-scale transmission and distribution.
- The project is also expected to create jobs and opportunities for local businesses, as Ameresco has plans to employ and contract with local contractors and suppliers.
