Acciona inaugurates 163-MWp Dominican solar complex, region’s largest to date
- Acciona cut the ribbon on a 162.6-MWp solar complex in the Dominican Republic, calling it Central America and the Caribbean’s largest PV installation.
Acciona has officially opened a 162.6-MWp solar complex in the Dominican Republic, a milestone the company says marks the largest PV installation across Central America and the Caribbean. Beyond the headline number, the project puts significant daytime generation close to growth corridors on an island grid that benefits from diversified sources and less reliance on imported fuels.
The engineering recipe is familiar—high-efficiency modules, string inverters for granular control, and plant-level automation aligned with local grid codes. But island systems impose extra rigor: voltage and frequency support, ride-through capability, and coordination with thermal units and hydro to handle sudden weather changes. The project is also expected to incorporate robust O&M—salt-air-resistant components, targeted cleaning schedules, and predictive maintenance via SCADA analytics.
Economically, the complex should stabilize daytime power costs and reduce exposure to oil price swings. Environmentally, it cuts local pollutants while aligning with national targets for renewables and resilience. As neighboring countries consider scaling their own fleets, Acciona’s commissioning offers a playbook for delivering utility solar at island scale with grid support built in from day one.
