Final investment decision expected soon.
Alcemi, in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, has been granted planning consent to build a 500MW (1000MWh) energy storage facility in Coalburn, Scotland. The project is expected to reduce 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over 35 years and will support the national transmission system by limiting the impact of network constraints and reducing energy costs for consumers. The final investment decision is expected soon, and construction will begin shortly afterwards. The project has been designed with sustainability and safety standards in mind, with measures to promote biodiversity and limit the visual impact.
Will 500MW Scottish Project Succeed?
- The project is expected to prevent around 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over 35 years
- The project has undergone extensive environmental impact assessments to ensure it meets the highest sustainability and safety standards
- Biodiversity will be promoted across the site through the maintenance of peat reserves, tree and wildflower planting, and the creation of new habitats
- Landscaping measures will be taken to limit the visual impact of the project
- The final investment decision from CIP is expected later this month, with construction commencing shortly thereafter
- The project will provide peak storage capacity and help lower the overall energy costs for consumers and lowering the carbon intensity of the UK power sector
