The Australian Federal government has approved the construction of the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH), a 1,200-MW/2,400-MWh battery storage facility that will be located in Plumpton, 25km northwest of Melbourne’s commercial business district. The AUD-1.9-billion project is owned by Equis Development Pte Ltd, which acquired it from Syncline Energy and doubled the proposed capacity. Once completed, the facility could power over one million homes and include a co-located solar plant. Construction is expected to start in 2023 and be completed by 2024. It will be the largest battery storage facility in Australia and Asia.
