Flow Power has won the development permit for a 100-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Victoria, Australia. The Bennetts Creek scheme will be located near the Morwell Terminal Station and provide renewable electricity to stabilise the grid during frequency disruptions, reducing the occurrence of blackouts. It will also offer battery-firmed renewables to Victorian energy customers and connect them to 100% renewable energy in real time. Flow Power expects to achieve financial closure next year, with construction beginning in Q3 of 2024 and the battery operational late in 2025.

Will Flow Power's 100-MW BESS Project Reduce Blackouts?

• The project is part of Victoria’s Renewable Energy Target, which is aiming to generate 25% of its energy from renewables by 2020 and 40% by 2025.
• When completed, the Bennetts Creek BESS will be one of the largest battery storage systems in the country, capable of supplying electricity to almost 10,000 homes and businesses.
• The battery will be charged by existing renewables, such as solar and wind, and will be able to provide up to 100 megawatts (MW) of instantaneous power - enough to power the equivalent of 20,000 homes.
• The project is expected to reduce the frequency of blackouts in Victoria by storing renewable energy that would otherwise be wasted and releasing it when needed.
• Flow Power has said that the project will help provide stability to the grid and help to meet Victoria's renewable energy targets, as well as providing access to 100% renewable energy for customers.
