What is Wholesale electricity?

Large-scale power generating plants sell electrical energy on the wholesale market. The price they charge per unit energy is much lower compared to the retail price consumers pay. It is because transmission, distribution, or retailing costs are excluded from the wholesale price. In Australia, wholesale electricity price is one of the lowest among the developed countries – about 4 cents per kWh (depending on the state).
