What is Vertical multijunction (VMJ) cell?

Can be also referred to as a multiple-junction cell. A compound PV device comprised of different semiconductor materials, layered one above the other. The light incident on the top layer passes through successive junction regions, each of which transforms a specific fraction of the solar spectrum to electrical energy. This way, the total conversion efficiency of the incident sunlight is maximized. See also split-spectrum cell and multijunction device.
