What is Solar thermal collector?

A solar collector specially designed for collecting heat. It absorbs solar radiation to convert it into heat. The most widespread example of solar thermal collectors is a flat-plate collector. Commonly, it is composed of the following components: a flat plate absorber, intercepting and absorbing solar energy; a transparent cover, letting the energy through but reducing heat loss from the absorber; a heat transfer fluid (water, antifreeze, or oil), that moves through the tubes, removing heat from the absorber; and a heat-insulating backing.
