Renewable portfolio standard (RPS)

What is Renewable portfolio standard (RPS)?

A regulation requiring energy providers to generate a portion of the electricity supplied from renewable sources. To satisfy this requirement, they can either construct renewable energy facilities (for example wind or solar power stations) of their own, or buy renewable energy credits from other renewable energy plant owners.
