What is Doping?

Intentional adding of small amounts of dopants to the crystal lattice of a pure semiconductor to modify its electrical characteristics. Doping silicon with phosphorus or other group V elements creates excess of negative charge and turns silicon into an n-type semiconductor. Addition of boron or other group III elements to silicon makes p-type silicon.
