Midsummer Gets EU Grant to Build 200-MW CIGS Factory

Midsummer AB, a Swedish thin-film solar technology specialist, has been selected to receive an EU grant to build a 200-MW CIGS solar cell factory in Sweden. The grant of just over EUR 32 million is part of the EU Innovation Fund's award of more than EUR 3.6 billion in grants to 41 clean technology projects. The CIGS solar cells are lightweight, flexible, and can be installed on lightweight roofs, providing an alternative to traditional silicon solar modules.

Midsummer CEO Sven Lindstrom commented that this grant will facilitate the establishment of the company's second European megafactory, after the planned 50 MW factory in Italy. The success of this project is expected to further strengthen Midsummer's foothold in the European solar market.

What Impact Will Midsummer's EU Grant Have?

  • The EU recently announced a grant of €200 million to back Panasonic's EverVolt Home Battery System, which will be used for research, development and the production of the system.
  • The EU grant will help Panasonic to reduce the cost of EverVolt Home Battery System, thus making it more accessible to homeowners.
  • The EU grant will also help Panasonic in developing and launching the new EverVolt SmartBox, which allows homeowners to control up to six loads and easily switch to battery backup in case of a power outage or grid failure.
  • The EU grant will enable Panasonic to create more jobs in the field of research, development and production of renewable energy systems. It will also accelerate the adoption of renewable energy sources worldwide.
  • The EU grant will help accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, thus helping to reduce the world's carbon footprint and tackling the climate crisis.
