Greenco Seals 25MW Solar Project in Zambia
Africa Greenco Group has secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy the output of a 25-MW solar project in Zambia. The Ilute photovoltaic (PV) project is being developed by Zambia-based Western Solar Power and Serengeti Energy, an African renewable independent power producer (IPP) owned by KfW, STOA, Proparco, Norfund, Swedfund and NDF. The scheme will be installed in the Sesheke district of Zambia’s Western Province and operated by Zambia’s national power utility ZESCO. It represents a direct foreign investment of US 37 million (EUR 34.3m) and construction is expected to begin next year with commercial operations commencing by 2025. In September, GreenCo signed an implementation agreement with the Zambian government to make the project a reality under the nation's open access power programme. What Investment is Africa Greenco Securing in Zambia? Africa Greenco is a Zambia-based renewable energy organization that is currently in the process of securing a $40 million investment for the construction of solar photovoltaic arrays in the country. The investment will support the deployment of clean energy to rural communities by creating new jobs and providing electricity to people who do not have access to it currently. The project will also provide education and training opportunities for Zambian youth, as well as create a new platform for international collaboration. Africa Greenco is also working with local governments and international organizations to provide technical and financial support for the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems in Zambia. The organization aims to increase solar capacity in the country from 10 megawatts to 50 megawatts in the next five years. Africa Greenco is also working on developing new technologies to make solar energy more accessible and efficient, such as the perovskite-organic hybrid tandem solar cell developed by researchers from Chonnam National University in South Korea. Through this project, Africa Greenco hopes to improve access to clean energy across Zambia and promote sustainable economic development.
